Thoughts...

Its been a while since I last wrote … actually “while” is an understatement its been a very long time…… the last was way back in the year when Pres. Obama won his first terms & A. R. Rahman won his Oscar……now Pres. Obama is already in his second term and Life of Pi is in the race for Oscars……lot has changes in these couple of years for good or for bad, as they say that’s the way life is ….. I hear you say we know this, what’s new or what's the point? ….hmm….that’s right most of us know what’s going around, so all that is "unknown" are the things that you hold in your head… mostly "thoughts" and stuff you have done and don’t want to share with anyone for whatever reasons……..

Thoughts….especially the good ones are visitors playing hide and seek at the most strangest time.... appearing when you are in the middle of something, maybe in the shower or rushing to work or in a meeting etc. and disappearing  exactly when you gets time to pen them down… its like they come to the party but don’t want to get photographed … They come as galloping horses (most of the time) across varied landscapes of lush green grasslands, mountain space, barren land or as waterfall dropping off a cliff, rushing waves lashing on the rocks, a gentle stream and very rarely a still lake……These visits drift the human body to a robotic state or into a motionless position... making it look like two different people occupying or co-existing in the same space and time......But, this existing lasts for a very small fraction of time… as science would put it, two form cannot co-exist under normal conditions for a long period of time... Wonder if this second person takes over as we pass out of the human form and transform to another form or space and is this second person we call as “soul”. If yes, then the current form somehow looks nothing but a phase in the metamorphosis of the larger “self” where, the body is not just a vehicle transporting the “self” between stages but also a cocoon molding or transforming it. Is it why we say the “soul” is within us - the human form?

While most of our thoughts do not want to get photographed but there are some that want to get imprinted for reasons unclear and unexplained declaring themselves to the current and future generations and being a catalyst in the transformation of some of the “self's” or “soul's” by affecting either the vehicle or the space it exists or directly the second person….either way they continue to play an interesting part in this unsolved puzzle called “life”

Don’t Judge A Book By Its Cover

It was Saturday (April 18, 2009) back home late from work surfing through Television channels killing time; a news item on the new English channel WB caught my attention. It was about this new sensation from Britain “Ms. Susan Boyle”, who is making all head turn for her performance on the British Reality show “Britain’s Got Talent”. As I had caught up with the news items in the middle I couldn’t make much sense of it, but did get to understand that this performance is getting lot of hits on “You Tube”.
So for curiosity sake got the chance to check out the video on you tube the very next day (lucky it was Sunday), I was spell bound and my mind froze for few minutes watching the performance…..it was pure magic……wondering what so great about it…..you must see it to believe it, rather feel it……….
Susan walks to the centre of the stage; irrespective of our nationality, color or creed we have already made our judgment of her just by her looks. Here is a 47 year old unemployed woman from the country side of Britain (Scotland to be precise) with the looks of the next door neighbour but with a dream to become a professional singer and as successful as Ellen Page. The expression that one get to see on the faces of the audience and on the Judges are no different that the mirror reflection of ourselves (although we may refuse to accept it). By this moment all of us have actually written her off.
Her song of choice for this audition is “I dreamed a dream from Les Miserables”
The music begins to play and everyone’s body language show their lackluster attitude. There is small smile on her face just before she begins the song, first few words are good enough to get the judges and audience to shake them and make them pull-up and get completely involved in the performance. As she sing along, one gets to see the picture of her grow into this huge tower of talent and all the rest turning into dwarfs with their jaws drop, spell bound. It’s so ironic to see we dwarfs had been judgmental of her just few minutes ago but now are asking the question if we are worthy enough to judge her. It was also ironic but at the same time comforting to see the frowning audience in a fraction of a second turn into cheer leaders.
The Lyrics and the music just fit perfectly. Is this what is called as the perfect match? - The right person at the right time at the right place with the right talent!
Susan has become an overnight star and she is already making waves not just in Europe but also in the USA and around the world through You Tube. In just 10days this performance of hers has gone on to have 30 million hits.
What is causing this euphoria? Is it the underdog story? Or is it that all of us see some part of ourselves in Susan – who have given up our dreams for various reason just like Susan gave hers up for taking care of her parents? Or are we seeing our dreams getting fulfilled through her success?
Whatever the reason may be Susan’s story has truly been a inspiration to lot many of us, in not giving up on our dream and to do our best in turning them into a reality. It has flushed new meaning to the quotes “Every Cloud has a Silver Lining” and “Leave no stone unturned”. Personally in addition to the above the biggest that all need to take home is, as summed up in the words of Amanda Holden (one of the judges of the show) “All of us were too cynical of her and this is the biggest wake-up call ever”

The Lyrics of the song “I dreamed a dream”

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high,
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving.
Then I was young and unafraid
When dreams were made and used,
And wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung,
No wine untasted.
But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hopes apart
As they turn your dreams to shame.
And still I dream he'll come to me
And we will live our lives together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms We cannot weather...
I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seems
Now life has killed
The dream I dreamed.

Where are we heading too?

The last couple of weeks we all had witnessed shocking and disturbing images on our television screens. The barbaric attack unleashed by Sri Ram Sena in Mangalore, the attack on the daughter of a Kerala MLA and more attacks on Hindu girls for talking to Muslim boys. In all this, one girl had taken her life as she couldn’t bear the humiliation but there are tens and hundreds of them who continue to suffer the trauma of these attacks. Many have lent their voices against these attacks and held campaign to send the message across that such attacks are not tolerated in a civilized society. Even after all these, it is extremely shocking to see our law enforcement agencies sitting idle and forgetting the fact that they had taken oath to protect the very same common man/woman who pays for their living (tax money paid to exchequer). All they did is to file a lawsuit against the Woman Union Minster for her comment “Mangalore has been Talibanised”. It is ironic to see such attacks on women in a country where a woman had recently made history by becoming the First women to occupy the “august office” of the Presidency (Commander-in-Chief), another is the most Powerful person in the country as she heads the ruling collation and pitted by the media as the lady who calls all the shots of days government (central) and in addition there are these women chief ministers, women ministers, women politicians, women bureaucrats, women professionals, etc.

All these attacks are done in the name of “Indian Culture”, but what is Indian Culture? Who has defined this? We live in a great country where culture (language/dialect, customs, clothing, food, etc.) changes every few hundred kilometers. Any layman who had read a little bit of Indian history would know that until the freedom movement this nation was actually a combination of small kingdoms. So the question, when did we have an “Indian Culture”? Where or which literature has captured this? Does it say that it is Indian to attack women but not Indian to go for pubs or Hindu girls talking to Muslim boys?

All these attacks were reported from the state of Karnataka, as far as my memory goes this the first time that I’m hearing of such attacks from this state. Given the fact that the state is ruled by a party that has its foundation in religion and given that this is the first time that it is in power make me wonder, if these extremist Hindu groups had taken advantage of this or were they given an open hand by the ruling bosses to go about with these attacks or did the state government protect these groups by making the law enforcement teams ineffective.

This state of affairs is really worrisome and raises questions on the direction our nation is heading too. All these attacks and divisions in the name of religion remind me of the “divide and rule policy” practiced during the British era. Our forefathers fought to free us from these very same policies and wanted us stand untied and secular. But, it looks few elements was us to slip back as we move into the future.

“The First’s”

The other day, while listening to radio and driving down to work, a thought popped-up….. Hypothetically, if I was to be a Radio Jockey, what would my first program be? After reviewing few options, I finally decided that my first show would cover the first songs released by various artists. The flow of thought was broken by loud honking traffic. As I started to write my first blog post, choosing the title turned out to be a mind boggling exercise. After a long deliberation, the thought of my radio show resurfaced, helping arrive at the title “The First’s”. Just a piece of warning, don’t jump into any conclusions just yet nor do you let your mind run wild on the contents of this post.
World financial crisis, Recessions, Job losses, Bail-Out packages all set the stage for a low key opening of 2009. New Year wishes had a genuine hope and wish for a better future. It was visible in India that most of us weren’t reacting any different than the rest of world. We had consciously or unconsciously started to curb our spending and divert funds to safer investments in order to weather the storm, but at the same time hoping that never do we get to see the day of the storm. People of my generation would agree when I say that as part of the earning class this is our First global crisis that we all are being a part off.
The first month of 2009 also made us witness one of the worst scandals in Indian Corporate world a First of its kind in “Satyam”. This raised various questions, how can & how did this happen? Is this just the tip of the iceberg? How many organizations are in a similar situation? Is the organization that I work for safe or is it sailing in the same boat? Our office lunch tables were filled with discussion and each one’s own assessments. Thanks to the media all of us had enough and varied inputs to these discussions. The news titles (“The Enron of India” or “The Biggest Scandal in Corporate India”) would easily become one of the topics for any debate competition. It was good to see the government getting into action and appoint a new board and trying to get things to normalcy.
By the time Satyam saga was moving down the priority list of the media a fresh one took over. After a long time, I got to see all news bulletins beginning with a joyous note. It was the news of jubilation of the movie Slumdog millionaire and its 4 Golden Globe win. As usual the media went overboard; every channel was either having an interview or a audience discussion with the slumdog brigade. In this entire jubilation one person name was standing out “The "Mozart of Madras" - A R Rahman. He is being raved as the best music director ever etc…, personally the first time I heard AR’s music (movie “Roja”) I loved his work and expected more great music from his future movies. But, as the years went by and after listening to his new numbers (most of them in Tamil), AR for me was turning out to be a good a sound engineer more than a composer. But, as an Indian, seeing a fellow countryman receive a Golden Globe for the very first time definitely makes me give him a standing ovation. Personally, the movie was good but it wasn’t worth the accolades. It made me wondering if it is getting all these reviews and recognition just because it is a British movie produced by the Big Hollywood Production Houses or was it because it fits with the notion of India in the minds of the western world or just because it is different from rest of the Hollywood Pack. Some of my friends didn’t like the movie because they felt very offended with the fact that the movie showcased India as a Poor and Dirty country (poverty & slum) all that I have to say is that every one is entitled to have their opinions. 10 Oscar nominations was quite a surprise but for the team of slumdog that definitely would be more than what they would have dreamt off.
The best “First’s” that the world witnessed, in the first month of the New Year, happened on Jan 20th ’09. The day history was made in US Politics. Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th President of USA. From civil rights movement to the presidency has definitely been a long hard journey for the Afro-American community. I have heard through the various stories of history that all great leaders have galvanized their people through their speeches. In my opinion, Obama did exactly just that. Looking back, the first time I heard of Obama was from the discussion of two Americans clients. At that time I thought Obama was an American Senator in his fifties or sixties with grey hair and fair skin. But, this image was soon erased, all thanks for having access to International media. The US media was no different from that of the Indian ones, all of them were just focused on color of his skin dominated rather than looking at him as a well educated lawyer. He is a Harvard Law School graduate where he was also the president of Harvard Law review and that he has served as a member of Illinois congress and the Senator from Illinois. With these great credentials the expectations on Obama and his team are really high but at the same time we need to acknowledge that they have ushered in a refreshing freshness and hope for US and the world. Hope you will join me in wishing them all the best.
